In preparation you have sent invites to loved ones, loaded the bonfire with wood, made a trip to the shop to purchase some daunting explosives called fireworks and sparkly sticks called... sparklers. But what you really need is something to give you dutch courage as you make a mad dash from a lit firework or attempt to put out the fence that is on fire due to a rogue Catherine Wheel.
And help comes in the form of some delightful cocktails that you can serve up to your guests and yourself. In this week’s blog we look at a range of drinks perfect for providing warmth on a chilly night as well as the bravery for tackling fireworks!
You may all know the classic hot toddy with its medicinal elements of whisky, lemon, honey, cinnamon or any other spices you fancy, I am a big fan of a few slices of ginger. It is a great drink that you can make in bulk and keep warm. Why not make a batch and put it in a thermos flask!
With this one we have gone for a twist with the addition of the excellent The Apiarist Gin. Already embracing the elements of honey, lemon and tea it really lends its self perfectly to the toddy!
Add all the ingredients to your favorite mug, top with boiling water and stir to combine and dissolve the honey.
Who doesn't love a hot chocolate, it is like a warm embrace in a mug. This one we have done in a slow cooker so it is perfect for a party and dishing out to your pals. We recommend adding the liqueur after so you can miss out those who are driving or children. If it's for one you could always just add a shot to your favourite hot chocolate.
The tipple we have gone with couldn’t be better matched! It is the delightful Sweet Potato Spirit Co. Pink Marshmallow Moonshine, perfectly enhancing the flavours of those pillowy sweets that adorn the top. The Toffee Apple Moonshine went down a storm during the Halloween tasting and we sold out!
Add all of the ingredients apart from the liqueur, moonshine and whipped cream to a slow cooker, you could put in a pan, heat for 2 hours before the party, stirring halfway through. Put a shot of moonshine in a mug, pour over the hot chocolate and top with whipped cream and marshmallows.
The classic Old Fashioned made with bourbon is perhaps one of the most popular cocktails, plus it is one of our favourites. With rich orange notes and a hint of warming spice from the bitters you can’t beat it! I am even sure Guy Fawkes would have been a fan!
With the smoke that fogs the air during Bonfire Night we were inspired to create a smokey version of this cocktail using Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire, a whisky from Islay, drawing on the hearty elements with lemon and honey.
In a mixing glass add the whisky, syrup and bitters and ice. Stir until you have the correct dilution to your taste. Pour into a rocks glass, express lemon oils over the drink and add zest to the glass.
*To make the honey syrup dissolve three tablespoons of honey in a little boiling water to make a runny syrup.
If you don’t fancy the hassle of creating cocktails and just want to have fun with your guests then let us do the work for you. We have litre bottles of mulled gin by Eliots, perfect for those chilly evenings!
It is a blend of gin, elderflower and mulling spices, all you have to do is warm it in a saucepan and pop it in mugs for your guests to enjoy! Unfortunately it is available for collection only, but make sure you grab a bottle as it is delicious and sells quickly!
From the team at SplitsDrinks we hope you have a great Bonfire Night!
